What is the Spanish NIE number and how to apply for it if I am an international student?

NIE stands for Número de Identidad de Extranjero. For those less familiar with the Spanish language, that basically means that it is a number that identifies a foreign visitor and gives them a number for identification. The NIE is needed for anyone who plans to stay in Spain for an extended period of time and wants to open a bank account or start working in the country. It is also necessary to purchase big things like properties and businesses as well, but it is very important for international students to get one for their longer stay in the country  

Obtaining the NIE

It is important to note that any student who will be in the country for less than 180 days does not qualify for the NIE nor do they need to get one at all. Generally speaking, for students who intend to stay for longer than 180 days, then the NIE would more than likely be included in the back of the Visa card. With that being said, the student must also apply for a TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad para Extranjeros) card within the first 30 days of being within the country. If the Student qualifies for the European Schengen visa, which is usually for European students, they will only need a NIE if they intend to stay in the country for longer than 90 days. 

Documents needed for the application

While the process is relatively straightforward, it is important for students to acquire the necessary documentation and have copies made just in case of any emergencies. The documents needed are as follows:

1.    A printed out NIE form
2.    Two most recent passport pictures
3.    A supporting document proving that an NIE is necessary for stay in Spain
4.    A valid passport that will not expire within the time spent in the country and photos of each page
5.    Fill out and pay the Tasa 790 form
6.    Certain police stations require proof of an address as well but this may not be necessary 

Estimated time of approval of the NIE

In order for a student to receive the ID card, they have to make sure they were properly approved through the receipt that was more than likely given. With that being said, the average wait time for approval is around two to three weeks. This may vary depending on external factors and other things that come into place that may be unforeseen initially. An email address is necessary for updates and further information about approvals and potential delays in the process. 

Why is the NIE important?

This number and card allow for many different purposes beyond economic benefits in Spain. For instance, it can be used as a primary form of identification for getting into bars and nightclubs as well as other sanctioned events exclusive to students or for other foreign  people. Another thing of note is that the holder is not required to be living in Spain while they have the card in their possession. It, like any other identification, has an expiration date and is valid until said date. If a person wishes to live in Spain for an extended period of time, they must consider the fact that they will need a visa prior to getting the NIE.
