WHAT IS THE HOMOLOGATION OF FOREIGN QUALIFICATIONS?
Homologation consists of the official recognition of training passed in another country and enables students to continue their studies at the next level of education. This recognition gives the foreign qualification the same effects as the Spanish qualification to which it is recognized throughout the national territory.
WHEN DOES A DIPLOMA NEED TO BE RECOGNISED?
ESIC's International Department helps you to manage the homologation process. Homologation is a process by which the Spanish Ministry of Education recognises that your secondary school studies give you access to a Spanish University, on the same terms as if you had studied in Spain.
At the end of the process the Spanish Ministry of Education grants you the Credencial de Homologación. The Credencial de Homologación is the equivalent of having the Spanish Bachillerato degree, which gives you access to a Spanish university..
The homologation process can take several months to become effective, so it should be initiated as soon as the required documentation is available. The Spanish Ministry of Education allows provisional enrolment with proof of having applied for homologation (volante de inscripción condicional en centros) with the Ministry's entry stamp.
Before the Credencial de Homologación, the Spanish Ministry of Education must have proof that the studies have been officially recognised in the country where they were taken. Therefore, the following steps must be followed:

Apply at the Spanish Embassy or Consulate in your country for the legalisation or Hague Apostille of the Academic Certification and the Diploma or degree that gives you access to university in your education system. The legalisation or apostille is the procedure that accredits the authenticity of a document through the signatures and seals of the competent authorities. If the country of origin of the studies undertaken is a signatory to the Hague Convention, a single legalisation or "apostille" issued by the competent authorities of the country is sufficient. In the case of countries that are not signatories to the Convention, these two documents must be legalised through diplomatic channels using the following procedure:
- Firstly, the documents must be stamped by the Ministry of Education of the country where you studied.
- Secondly, they must be stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country where you studied.
- Thirdly, they must be stamped by the Spanish embassy or consulate of the country where you studied.
All the seals must be on the diploma and the academic certification, not on the translation of the same. Once legalised and the Academic Certification and Diploma have the three necessary stamps, the legalised document must be translated into Spanish by a sworn translator, duly authorised or registered in Spain. This translation must be directly into Spanish and can be done at the Spanish embassy or consulate.
- Submit the following documentation to the ESIC Admissions Department:
- Original and photocopy of the Academic Certification, legalised and translated into Spanish.
- Original and photocopy of the Diploma or degree that gives you access to university studies in the country where you studied, already legalised and translated into Spanish.
- Original and photocopy of the identity document (passport).

Request the processing of the Homologation Credential. ESIC offers families and candidates a service for advice and/or obtaining the Credential and will provide you with the necessary forms to submit the application. It is not necessary to wait until you have the definitive credential to proceed to enrol at ESIC but it is vitally important that you hand in the necessary documents to start the homologation process at the beginning of the course.
We must take into account that it is a long process and the homologation credential is necessary for the enrolment to be definitive at ESIC and officially recognised by the Ministry of Education.

WHEN IS IT NOT NECESSARY TO HOMOLOGATE A DIPLOMA?
If you have studied in Spain, or in a Spanish school outside Spain, you must present the University Entrance Examination Card (EvAU) with a grade of Apta.
If you have studied in one of these educational systems you only have to present the credential granted by the UNED (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia) which certifies that you meet the university entrance requirements. The UNED is responsible for converting the qualification obtained in an education system to the Spanish scale from 1 to 10.
How to obtain the accreditation granted by the UNED?
The accreditation granted by the UNED is obtained through the UNED website. You can follow the steps indicated on the website, but given the complexity of this process, we recommend that families and/or students process it through the International Department of ESIC.
