REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCESS TO UNIVERSITY STUDIES IN SPAIN

Requirement for students who have studied in Europe with the Swiss or Chinese education system, who have studied the International or European Baccalaureate, or who have studied in any other country that has a bilateral agreement with Spain.

If you have taken a programme that follows one of these educational systems, you only need to send the credential issued by the UNED (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia) certifying that you have the necessary qualification to start university studies.

The UNED is responsible for providing an equivalent grade on a scale of 1 to 10.

How to obtain the UNED credential

The credential issued by the UNED can be obtained from its website: students are responsible for making the request to the UNED and completing the process.

The UNED requires different documents depending on the system; they are informed when the process is opened. In general, the documentation required to obtain the credential is as follows:

  • Photocopy of your ID card (if you are a Spanish national) or passport.
  • Diploma or certificate that allows you to access university studies in your corresponding education system. Those who have studied in the British education system (A Levels) will also need to send a certified copy of the GCSE and GCE A2 certificates.
  • Academic or school transcripts from the last two years of secondary school.

In some cases, sworn translations may be required.

Agreements on recognition for academic purposes with Germany, Italy, France, China, Argentina, Chile and Colombia.

Requirements for students coming from other education systems

The homologation is a process through which the Spanish Ministry of Education certifies that your secondary school studies allow you to enrol in a Spanish university, in the same way as if you had done your secondary school studies here.

This document certifies that you have a qualification equivalent to the Spanish baccalaureate and allows you to access Spanish universities. The process can take several months, so you MUST submit the initial documentation to our admissions Department as soon as possible. However, you CAN start the admission process, even if you do not yet have the homologation.

The Spanish Ministry of Education allows enrolment (on a temporary basis) if you present a document proving that you have applied for homologation.

How to obtain the homologation of your secondary school studies

Before starting the homologation process, the authenticity of the diploma, academic documents and report cards must be confirmed. To do so, the student must have the corresponding stamp issued by the authorities certifying the legal value of his/her school diploma in the country where the school is located.

The documents required vary depending on the educational system.

There are two ways to initiate the homologation process:

  1. If the country in which the student has obtained his/her diploma is a member of the Hague Convention, the student will only need to present an apostille issued by the authorities of the country where the institution is located. Note: The apostille is a stamp confirming the authenticity of a document and is issued by the relevant authorities.
  2. Those who have studied in countries that are not part of the Hague Convention will have to present a certificate of their diploma, the marks of the last three years and, in some cases, a certificate that allows them to access university studies in their educational system. To do so, the following steps must be followed:
    • All stamps must be on the diploma and transcript, NOT on the sworn translations.
    • At the end of the process, each document (the academic certificate and the diploma) must have three stamps, and then a sworn translation into Spanish of these documents will be made by an authorised professional.
    • You can apply directly at the Spanish Embassy or Consulate in your country.

Documentation (minimum) to be submitted in order to request the homologation

  • Certified copy of the apostilled degree and the report card. Certified copies can be obtained at the Spanish Embassy or Consulate or at any notary's office. The Spanish Government will not accept copies issued by authorities or notaries that are not recognised in Spain.
  • Sworn translation into Spanish of the apostilled degree and the report card. Certified copies can be obtained from the Spanish Embassy or Consulate, or you can request the services of a sworn translator in Spain (translations issued by authorities or sworn translators who are not recognised in Spain will have to obtain an apostille).
  • Certified photocopy of your identity card or passport. Certified copies can be obtained at the Spanish Embassy or Consulate, or at any notary's office. The Spanish Government will not accept self-made copies or those issued by authorities or notaries who are not recognised in Spain..

Some universities, after homologation, require students to pass the EBAU or the specific competency tests (PCE). In the case of ESIC, this is not a requirement.

ADMISSION PROCESS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

If you are a student from a pre-university education system other than Spanish, you will need to meet each of the requirements to study one of ESIC's University Degrees. In this section we explain step by step how to enrol at ESIC.

So that you can plan as well as possible and have time to prepare your documents, we would like to remind you that the academic year in Spain starts in September and ends in June.

Even if you have not finished your Bachillerato, IB Diploma, A levels, Baccalaureate, Maturitá or equivalent educational system, you can still take the admission tests and then reserve your place, until you complete your documentation on the established dates.

Language requirements for studying our degrees

It is essential that the language requirement is met by the candidate in order to be admitted to any of our degrees.

  • QUALIFICATIONS IN SPANISH: Minimum B2 (Spanish)
  • DEGREES DELIVERED IN ENGLISH: Minimum B2 (English)
  • DEGREES DELIVERED IN BILINGUAL MODALITY: Minimum B2 (English and Spanish)

If you have an official language certificate that is no more than two years old, it will be valid and you will not need to take our internal language test. If you do not have an official language certificate, an internal level test will be carried out through the ESIC Language Area.

Valid qualifications for English: Cambridge English (First, Advanced and Proficiency), IELTS, TOEFL and TOEIC.

Valid qualifications for Spanish: DELE B2, DELE C1 and DELE C2.

To start the admission process you must make an appointment with the admissions team beforehand. You can do this online or by telephone. Choose the campus where you wish to do your degree studies.

The admission process can be done online or in person at any of our campuses and consists of a personal interview, a business case study and an English test*.

*English test is not exclusive for degrees taught in Spanish.

1. REQUEST YOUR APPOINTMENT.

You will need to tell us what day and time you would like to take the tests. Choose your preferred method of testing.

2. APPOINTMENT CONFIRMATION.

Once you have requested your appointment, you will receive a confirmation email with all the steps to follow.

3. ADMISSION TESTS.

No prior preparation is necessary. On the date and time requested, you will receive an email with a link to our platform if you take the test online. If you take the test in person, we will be waiting for you at the Undergraduate Admissions Department of the selected Campus.

4. RESOLUTION.

Once all the phases of the admission tests have been completed, we will inform you of the resolution within 72 hours (3 working days).

The ESIC admission test can be taken in Spanish or English, depending on the language in which you are going to study the university degree. The test lasts approximately one and a half hours and does not require prior preparation. The admission test is divided into four phases:

  1. Personal Interview: the purpose of this test is to find out the candidate's profile, their affinity with the chosen degree and their degree of motivation to study at ESIC.
  2. Practical or Business Case: this test focuses mainly on the candidate's ability to write, reason and express themselves and not so much on their knowledge or mastery of the subject.
  3. English or Spanish test: this will allow the candidate's language level to be assessed. English-speaking students applying to study a degree in English or Spanish-speaking students applying to study a degree in Spanish will not need to take the test, as will those candidates who hold an official language certificate.

It is important that you have the following documentation (either in digital or physical format) ready a few days before requesting your appointment:

  • Passport or NIE.
  • Baccalaureate or equivalent educational system grades.
  • Legal Access Requirement to the Spanish University (Definitive Homologation of the Foreign Baccalaureate or Definitive UNED Accreditation). In case of wanting to study the ‘Higher Degree in Global Marketing’, it will not be necessary to have access to the Spanish University, but it will be necessary to have the baccalaureate or equivalent.
  • Official Language Certificate (If you do not have an official English certificate, you can take our internal language test).

The place reservation must be paid once the candidate has received the notification of the admission decision and before the date indicated therein. If the payment is not made on time, the place cannot be guaranteed. This notification will contain the steps to follow for the reservation of the place and the following procedures.

The reservation fee will be refunded if the student has not passed the Bachillerato, Ciclo Formativo de Grado Superior or similar or the corresponding university entrance exam.

The registration fee will have to be paid once the student has one of the legal requirements for access to the Spanish university (Homologación del Bachillerato Extranjero Definitiva or Acreditación UNED definitiva). For this purpose, the Undergraduate Student Services Office will inform the student of all the steps to follow.

The enrolment period may vary depending on each ESIC campus, we recommend that you contact the corresponding campus to find out the exact enrolment dates.

ESIC has a collaboration agreement with a Consultant of Homologation and Legalisation of academic documents for your access. This agency is an expert in obtaining the legal requirements for university access (UNED ACCREDITATION and HOMOLOGATION OF DEFINITIVE FOREIGN BACCALAUREATE).

At ESIC we offer this alternative so that you can process your legalisation of documents in an easier and safer way. This procedure can take a long time and in the case of missing documents, your application may be rejected by the corresponding body.

It is important to bear in mind that if you do not have these legal access requirements, which are necessary for your enrolment, you will not be able to start your studies with us. Depending on the pre-university education system you come from, you will need one legal requirement or another.

IMPORTANT: The MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, CULTURE AND SPORT takes between 3 and 6 months to issue the resolution (most of the time it takes 6 months), so our recommendation is that you do the paperwork as soon as possible so that your Homologación del Bachiller Extranjero Definitiva is on time and you can enrol without any problems.

* ESIC is a private centre attached to different universities on each of its campuses, so the admission and final enrolment of international students to study an Official Degree is subject to the requirements, regulations and fees that these universities establish for the corresponding academic year.

In the case of wanting to study the Higher Degree in Global Marketing the candidate will not need the two previous requirements for access to the Spanish university, it will only be necessary to submit the Certificate of Baccalaureate approved and apostilled.
